Twelve Canoes

‘12 Canoes’ refers to the sequential naming of each new project springing from the 2005 Rolf de Heer and Peter Djigirr Co-directed film, ‘Ten Canoes‘ in which they maintain an ongoing role. It also refers to the number of portals on the site, each presenting a different aspect of Yolgnu culture: creation, ancestors, kinship, seasons, first contact, nowadays and so on.

What makes the site unique is that the richness of the Yolgnu culture is revealed by combining video, photography and spoken first-person narrative available in both English and Yolgnu.
